1st class mail art exhibiton!!

Here is the first exhibition of mail art held at the sorting office in Northwich. It is a mix of mail art collected by myself and michael. the posted hands are from a project Michael instigated for the Worceter art gallery back in 1997. It ran for a total of three years and had more than 200 participants from over 15 countries. The collection was recently shown at Cardiff school of art in Wales More information on this project can be found by following the link to handypostcard.blogspot.com.
Michael has been doing mail art since the 1980s making assemblages, postcards, books, zines and other small publications and he works under the umbrella name of A.1 Waste Paper Co.Ltd. I first met Michael when he helped me with some research for my dissertation on artists books and it was then that i became interested in Mail Art. I make artists books, objects to be touched, ATCs and journals. my umbrella name is whole caboodle !my collection of mail art at the sorting office is my add too puppet dolls, sets of ATCs and some of my books. my books are on tour with the sitting room exhibition, brighton and winchester.

The first exhibition

These are my very first photos from the mail art exhibition at the sorting office. As you can see I am not the best photographer and I need to go back and take some more photos without the glass! The nice man did tell me that but I didnt listen! Michael, Hazel and I installed the work today and although it took longer than we thought we really enjoyed it. It was so nice to install mail art and in an appropriate place too. it looks better than I thought it would I am very pleased with the result. I hope lots of people see it while they are picking up their post. One of the nice postmen behind the glass told me that he used to deliver mail at michaels house and he can remember all sorts of odd things going through the postbox such as bits of old wood and plastic bananas!! lets hope we can exhibit more mail art here. I so love the post office!!!!
